After years of rumors, Apple has officially entered the foldable phone world. At its September 9 “Surprise and Shine” event, Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo — its first foldable iPhone, and arguably the biggest design shift the iPhone has seen since it launched back in 2007. Here’s a rundown of what it actually is and what it can do.

A New Kind of Design

The iPhone Duo opens like a book, folding out from a compact outer display into a much larger screen on the inside. The frame is machined titanium, with Ceramic Shield on the back and Ceramic Shield 2 up front, and the whole thing carries an IP68 water-resistance rating — so it’s built to hold up to daily wear and tear, not just look impressive on a shelf. A custom hinge made from more than 100 precision components keeps the inner display flat when open, and a set of internal magnets gives it a satisfying, secure snap when closed.

It comes in two colors: Star White and Night Sky. Closed, it’s about the size and shape of a passport.

Two Displays, One Very Big Screen

Unfolded, the iPhone Duo has a 7.6-inch inner display — Apple’s largest screen ever on an iPhone, and about 50% bigger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Closed, you get a more familiar 5.4-inch outer display for everyday use. Both screens support ProMotion, Always-On display, and up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness, with a nano-texture finish on the inner display to cut down on glare.

Apple says that fully opened, it’s also the thinnest iPhone ever made.

What’s Powering It

Under the hood is the A20 Pro chip, the same processor found in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, built on a 2-nanometer process and paired with a vapor-chamber cooling system borrowed from Apple’s M-series Mac design. Battery life is handled by two batteries — one on each side of the hinge — that work together as a single unit. Apple estimates around 24 hours of typical mixed use, up to 31 hours using just the inner display, or up to 44 hours if you stick to the outer screen.

Camera and Software

The Duo has a dual 48MP Fusion rear camera system with Apple’s usual computational photography tools — Photonic Engine, Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 5, and Photographic Styles 3 — along with Dolby Vision HDR and Spatial Audio recording. It skips a dedicated telephoto lens and traditional Face ID; instead, Touch ID is built into the side button, and the phone can also be unlocked with a paired Apple Watch. A hidden under-display camera handles FaceTime on the inner screen.

On the software side, iOS 27 has been reworked specifically for the Duo’s folding form factor, and later this year the device will add support for Apple Pencil over USB-C — a first for the iPhone lineup. Apple also introduced a new Siri Camera mode that lets Siri “see” what’s on screen to help answer questions or take action.

Price and Availability

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB and goes up to $3,199 for 2TB. Pre-orders open October 16, with the device arriving in stores October 23 — about five weeks after the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which are already available now.
